SHARED SPACES, SHARED STORIES: REIMAGINING THE URBAN SQUARE

At the core of the project is the reactivation of identity and memory, promoting permeability and a coherent system of interconnected spaces capable of serving different users throughout the day. This is achieved through the reading of urban flows, the observation of social dynamics, and engagement with the cultural, historical, and spatial layers of the site. The ability to manage and synthesize this information is essential to develop a methodology based on rigorous urban analysis, capable of respecting the past while designing for the future.

The concept of the square goes beyond its physical dimension, becoming a place for encounter, dialogue, and shared experience. The challenge lies in transforming the existing public space into a new urban centrality through targeted interventions that preserve its historical value.

The initial analysis revealed a network of open spaces and green areas lacking identity and weakly connected. The project system aims to integrate them, making Parco dell’Isola Carolina permeable and an active part of the intervention. The main urban axes are drawn into the area, generating three key nodes capable of activating flows.

Sinuous paths organize the space into a sequence of urban “rooms,” enhancing the overall experience. The project is further characterized by cantilevered elements that provide new views and act as landmarks. The elevated square thus becomes a recognizable and accessible element, inviting exploration and participation, and taking on a central role within the urban system.
Our project for Lodi was conceived with this philosophy: to create places that invite people not only to pass through, but to stop, observe, participate, and connect.
